2016 to Arillas, Corfu, Greece.
After a hectic few months of selling our house and moving into a granny flat, we have started preparations for our trip to Greece. Even though we are still unpacking boxes – well it is a big drop from 6 bedrooms to 1 bedroom.
Firstly we have bought a new Motorhome. It is quite a bit bigger than the last one, with a proper bathroom and a bed that drops down from over the cab. This saves having to make the bed up every day. It is only one meter longer, but wider and higher, there is much more room. Phil is busy fitting a refillable gas system and a solar panel. Also some USB sockets for charging phones, kindles etc.
Our new baby is called Huee the Hymer.
We have booked our ferries – Hull to Zeebrugge on the 21st April and Ancona to Igoumenitsa on 29th April.
We have decided to leave a little later this year so that we can be here for our Great Grandson Archie’s first birthday on 20th April.
2016 Nearly ready
Each day we are getting a bit closer to our leaving home date of 21st April.
Storing everything we took out of the old van in the new one, plus some new items we have bought. There is so much more room, we still have empty cupboards but am sure that won’t last long. We are going to buy some new crockery, when we see some we like.
Updated laptop to Windows 10 – hope I don’t regret it!
Good news – we have sold Mercy our Toyota campervan, to a lovely local family who love her as much as we do. If they only have half the fun and adventures we had, they will be very happy.
Solar panel is fitted and working very well. All that free energy from the sun is great.
My friend Sandra came yesterday to wish us bon voyage and to see Huee. we had our first glass of wine in him – so he is well and truly christened now. It is a very sociable van, five people and two dogs and did not feel at all cramped.
Today is Archie’s first birthday – he is absolutely gorgeous, happy all the time and just so dammed cute. I drove the van for the first time today, the only thing is that it it so much wider than Mercy, I suppose I will get used to it. We also took it to get some gas in the refillable tanks – so we are all good to go now.
Had a meal with the family for Archie’s birthday tonight.
Journey to Arillas!
We spent the last couple of days before departure loading Huee with all our essentials for a 3 month trip.
We went to the weigh-bridge to make sure we are not overloaded. All OK 60 kg to spare, so room for some wine when we get to Europe lol. We put some gas into our new re-fillable bottle, but found a slight leak, so Phil checked all the connections and he is confident it is all good to fill up when we get to Europe, where it is cheaper than the UK.
20th April 2016
We had a very special birthday party to attend today – our Great Grandson, Archie is one year old today. He is such a stunner and I am sure he will grow into a handsome boy. His cake was beautiful too – chocolate with butter cream inside.
21st April 2016
We drove over to Hull to catch the 6.30pm ferry to Zeebrugge. Poppy settled in her kennel, she is used to this now and just settled down. We went up to the bar and had a couple of drinks while sailing down the Humber and watching Grimsby and Cleethorpes fade away.
22nd April 2016
We woke in Belgium to a bright coolish day and headed off South towards Koblenz – Koblenz is an ancient city in central Germany, and a gateway to the terraced vineyards and ruined castles of the Rhine Gorge. In the center, a monumental statue of William the Great marks the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. A cable car connects to the hilltop
Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which hosts museums and cultural events. South along the river is the neo-Gothic Stolzenfels Castle with its gardens.
Our first night was spent at a Stellplatz we had our first meal cooked with our new Ridge Monkey cooking pan, I am quite impressed with it.
It was such a lovely peaceful spot we decided to stay for two nights as Phil wanted to mend/adjust a couple of things that were not quite right.
24th April 2016
We carried on Southwards and spent the night in a Rest-stop in Pforzheim near Stuttgart. Passing some beautiful scenery in the Alps.
25th April 2016
Today we entered Austria – more beautiful scenery we spent the night at
Camping Via Claudiasee, Pfunds, Austria right next to a fast flowing river.
26th April 2016
These are the last shots of Austria before we drove into Italy.
We spent the night in Bassano del Grappa at a municipal camping stop – but their machine was not working so we did not pay.
27th April 2016
Drove through Italy on non toll roads, through some interesting towns but nothing really pretty. We spent the night in Gradara. Gradara is a town and commune in the Province of Pesaro e Urbino, in the region of Marche in central Italy. It is 6 Kmfrom da Gabicce Mare and Cattolica, 25 Km from Rimini, 15 Km from Pesaro. This area is very special to us as we spent our honeymoon in Cattolica – 35 years ago.
28th April 2016
We drove further south to Fano and found a beautiful spot to spend the night next to the beach, at the side of Restaurant la tratto. It was pouring with rain when we arrived so we did not walk along the beach. This is the view from our window.
We did have a nice meal in the restaurant finished off with Vodka lemon sorbet, it was lush.
29th April 2016
Today is our son Andy’s birthday. I hope he got the card I posted before we left.
Just a short hop to Ancona today to catch the ferry for Greece. We made a quick stop at Lidl to stock up with a few bottles of Zinfandel, my favourite wine.
We boarded the ferry and all 3 of us made our way up to our pet friendly cabin. Patras Travel who we always book with give us a free upgrade of a cabin and a 30% discount off food in the self service restaurant. We had a quick stroll around the deck for Poppy to have a walk. Then Phil and I went to eat, we had 1 chicken and chips, 1 Spag Bol,1 Greek salad with the biggest piece of cheese I have ever seen, and a bottle of Greek red wine all for 19 euros. We went to bed early excited to be arriving in Greece when we wake up.
1st week in Arillas
30th April 2016
Wow what a beautiful day, wall to wall sunshine and 19 deg. We disembarked in Igoumenitsa and made our way across to the old port to catch the little ferry to Corfu. This was the first time we have been on their new fast ferry, was a perfect sail, the sea was so calm. We arrived at Corfu Port to find lots of traffic, it was so busy as this is the annual ‘red pot throwing day’ On the Greek islands Holy Week ceremonies begin on Palm Sunday. At 11.00 in the morning, the litany of the Holy Shrine of Saint Spyridon takes place in recognition of the miraculous deliverance of the island from the spread of the deadly plague in 1629. This litany is the largest in size and length, and follows the trail of the old Venetian city walls. All the Philharmonics (the local name for brass bands) of this Ionian island participate to honour the Patron Saint of Corfu. On the same night, the “Mántzaros” Philharmonic presents a solemn concert which beautifully evokes the melancholy mood of the Passion, or Holy, Week.
We have had an incredible journey in our new to us 17 year old, left hand drive Hymer van Huee. He has behaved very well, I was a little nervous at first because he is quite a bit wider than the old van, but I have driven the 1200 miles confidently, well most of the time. One hairy moment was when we had to cross quite a narrow bridge, lots of traffic about and there was a bluming great Artic coming towards me I am sure there was only a couple of inches each side of us. We have loved having all the space, the beds are so comfortable and the bathroom is luxury to us.
What has made this trip extra special for us is, we have been carrying a precious cargo. Our very good friend, whom we met in Arillas, several years ago, Christine died last September. Her husband Bob said that they had always talked of driving to Arillas and asked if we would take Christine’s ashes with us. We feel very proud and privileged to have been entrusted to do this. Bob will be flying out with other members of the family later this month and we will scatter her ashes on what would have been Christine’s birthday.
1st May 2016
Easter Day on Corfu. The day when everyone has Red eggs for breakfast.
Phil found a tiny lizard in our hallway, he picked it up to put it on the balcony as we didn’t want to tread on it or for Poppy to play with it.
We were invited for lunch with the lovely Makris family at the Marvel Hotel. It was a fantastic spread and lots of good company.
After our meal we played a Pub game called ‘Shut the box’ We had never played it before and thoroughly enjoyed it – we had a good laugh.
The people in the photo are Sue and Paul (next door neighbours one side), Alison, Phil, me, Ann and John (neighbours the other side). Sat at the bar are Spiros and Sophia. Copious amounts of alcohol was consumed.
As you can see – some was even spilled, poor Ann had to get changed as she had a glass of red accidentally poured over her. I offered to pour my white wine on her, as I have heard this is good for getting the stain out, but she declined my offer.
We had a great evening, meeting up with lots of friends – our first, of many late nights!
2nd May 2016
Bit of a miserable day today, the heavens opened around lunch time, it was cold and wet all day. We decided to stay in and recover from yesterday. We caught up with emails, I wrote my blog of the journey, then we watched an episode of ‘The Durrells’ on the laptop.
We have discovered what we think is the start of a wasps nest, attached to the underside of the roof on our balcony. Our landlord Yannis came and removed it for us.
3rd May 2016
Wet start to the day again. It turned out sunny and warm though. We met our friend Neil for a drink in the Marvel and then we walked down to the beach for Poppy to have a good run and her first swim of the year.
We felt lazy when we got back so we stayed in and I cooked a Pizza.
4th May 2016
Beautiful sunny day today, did some washing and it is all hanging out in the sun and slight breeze.
Paul our next door neighbour brought Poppy a huge lamb bone, he also took her for a walk and run on the beach.
We had a drive over to Sidari to do a bit of shopping and get some cash out of the ATM. While we were driving over the uneven roads we heard an almighty bang in our bathroom, we pulled over to have a look and it was the mirror which was attached to the bathroom cabinet in hundreds of pieces all over the floor. We think the double sided tape is 17 years old and the bumpy roads have shaken it loose. When we got back to Arillas we went to Armourada for a meal with friends. I had to touch Billy’s hair, love the colour.
5th May 2016
Beautiful start to the day, bright and sunny already 18 deg at 11am. Got up to a very pleasant 22 deg this afternoon. It was such a lovely day we decided to drive over to Sea Monkeys in Sidari with our neighbours Ann and John. We all had Brunch/lunch and Poppy found some new friends to throw a Frisbee for her. She was all played out and kept going under a nearby tree in the shade to rest. It was great to see Andy and Fiona again, with their dog Toffee. We also caught up with Will and Danielle. Will is now working in the bar and will be doing the sunbeds, no more boats for him. Danielle will be working at Sharon’s pool bar, once again when it gets a little busier.
We were still too full from our brunch to go out this evening, we stayed in and had crisp butties, we know how to live it up!
6th May 2016
21 deg at 11am. People are talking about a heatwave at home but I just looked and it is only 12 deg in Grimsby, I am glad we are here. We went down to Dave’s Quiz at the Malibu – quite a good turn out. At half time we had one game of Bingo too, Phil won 5 euros for the line. Another couple of glasses of wine for us lol.
We went to have a last drink with Cliff before he flew home this evening. Then went into the Rainbow for a huge friendly welcome from all the family. We had a meal with Paul, Sue and Ross. Jimmy joined us too, to eat his dinner with us. Phil and I had our favourite Chicken fajitas wraps, they were so good.
End of our first week – just as good as always. Love the start of the season before it gets too busy with tourists.
2nd Week in Arillas
Another beautiful day got up to 23 deg this afternoon. We stayed in and chilled out. Sat in the garden for a while topping up my tan. Went to talk to our new neighbours in the field next door, 4 baby goats, they have plenty to eat in there.
Paul the goat
Huee looking lovely in the sunshine
Front garden looking very pretty.
This evening we went for a Pizza in our favourite place Pizza Lithero, it was great to see Vas is still cooking them beautifully. Then we walked down to Coconut, as we heard they may be open, but no, maybe tomorrow. Nightcap in the Marvel with Ann and John and home to bed.
This is a photo from the other day, I could not get it to upload for some reason – it is Poppy having a rest in the shade at Sea Monkeys.
8th May 2016
Chilling day, sat in the sun doing Suduko and reading. Just couldn’t be bothered to move or do anything interesting or strenuous.
9th May 2016
Ditto as above, but this evening we went to Mon Amour with Ann and John. We had a beautiful meal, as usual. The food is all freshly cooked, Phil and I had Chicken Souvlaki, Ann had a Pork chop and John had Meatballs which looked more like Bifteki to me.
Mon Amour holds special memories for me, we have been there with lots of special friends, including Dot(she is coming next week to stay with us) and Bill, who is no longer with us. He was one very special gentleman, and we miss him so much. One of the best evenings there was with our friend Barbara on 20th April last year, when our beautiful Great grandson Archie entered the world during our dinner.
Another perfect evening rounded off with a nightcap(or three) at the Marvel, waiting for our friends, Kes and Kath, Gaye and Nigel to arrive. Lots of putting the world to rights, laughs and good company.
Sunset – taken by our friend Ross
10th May 2016
Another relaxing day, doing ‘b’ all really apart from sunbathing, reading etc. Our friends Joy and Ian popped down to see us, we sat on the balcony with the obligatory wine. Great to catch up with what they have been up to since January when they moved out here. They have offered to take us for a Chinese one night, as Ian knows I don’t fancy driving Huee to Sidari and back in the dark. Love them to bits. Also he is taking me to pick Dot up from the airport on Saturday. that will be a nice surprise for her as she thinks I have booked a taxi for her. Stayed in tonight and had Bacon and eggs – not Greek but it is what we fancied.
11th May 2016
Today we had a drive over to Sidari to get some more sausages from the UK shop. We had a good catch up with Laura, she had a good look around Huee and loves him too. We always buy sausages from Laura, also got Phil a genuine Steak and Kidney Pukka pie, his favourite.
This evening we had a wander down to Thalassa for their opening evening. All the tables were full, we had a lovely welcome from Spiros and Agi. I had Moussaka and Phil had a huge sirloin steak. As usual it was superb, a wonderful meal
We had to call into the Coconut on the way back, and came across Kes and Kath having a quiet nightcap. So we joined them for one or three.
Phil is struggling with his COPD this year, but he managed to walk down and back with only a few rest stops. He did well bless him.
12th May 2016
Welcome to the world baby Noah xx
This morning I received some wonderful news, from my friend, since we were at college together when we were 16. Sandra’s grandson and his partner had a baby boy yesterday, 9lb 3oz. Welcome to the Great grandparents club. She sent me a text saying ‘Snap I have one now’.
Had quite a bit of rain today, at least it is warm rain. It was dull and miserable all day so we didn’t venture far. This evening we went into the Rainbow for dinner. We met up with Denise and Paul, our friends from Cleethorpes. Also had a quick catch up with John and Dot, who came back from the Marina after, what sounded like a very delicious Liver dinner. After our meal a lovely lady and her husband came over to introduce themselves, Val Lawrence and Steve, it was so good to meet you. We have spoken on the Forum and Facebook for years, but this was the first time we have met, face to face. We spent an enjoyable couple of hours chatting about our adventures and our mutual love of travel.
13th May 2016
Friday the 13th – and what a beautiful day to wake up to, also the smell of all the wild flowers is beautiful. I love the smell of Corfu. Sat in the garden on and off, had to keep popping inside to cool off.
We had a lovely surprise visit from our friend Eleni, she brought us a box of ice cream cakes, they taste delicious.
This evening we went to Brouklis and we both had Bifteki stuffed with cheese, our favourite there. Phil said he enjoyed it even more than his Sirloin steak. Nightcap at the Marvel, with Ann and John and just as we were leaving, Gaye and Nigel came back after spending the evening with Kes and Kath. Poor Nigel is really suffering with his chest infection, hope he feels better soon. Phil had a bad chest infection one year and we were told it is from the Olive pollen at this time of year.
Off to bed now as I am going to collect Dot from the airport in the morning. Kalinixta!
3rd Week in Arillas
14th May 2013
Beautiful morning to wake up to. I had to set my alarm as Ian was taking me to the airport to meet Dot. We did a quick trip to Lidl for some shopping, then a stop off at a coffee shop for caffeine and a loo. Dot was so pleased to see me as she knew I didn’t fancy taking Huee to the airport, she was expecting a taxi.
We had a lovely day catching up with all our news. Joy and Ian came to say hello to Dot, on their new quad bike. More of the obligatory wine!
This evening we stayed in and had Lasagne and Salad. Dot was so tired as she did not go to bed last night as her taxi picked her up at 4am.
15th May 2016
Quite cool and cloudy today, it didn’t really change until about 6pm when the sun decided to come out.
It was the opening of the Arillas trail today, looks like there was a good turn out for it, unfortunately we didn’t get up in time for it.
Did some washing, and tidying and then sat and tackled a crossword with Dot. Phil went to watch the Grand Prix.
This evening we went to Portofino with Gaye and Nigel Hillary. We had a fantastic evening with them, Nigel is such an interesting guy. He kept us entertained and also told us about the book he has published in honour of his father, Wing Commander Walter Hillary, DFC., DFM. It is called ‘From Biplane to Boeing’ The book is based almost entirely on his father’s personal logbooks and notebooks which he maintained all the way through his career, logging the detail of every flight. It sounds fascinating, and to be able to know how your own father’s career transpired must be awesome. If my own father had kept diaries I think I would have published them too, in tribute to a great man.
It was good to catch up with Spiros and hear al his news from the Winter. He has, at last stopped smoking, and put a little weight on, but he looks really healthy.
It was so sad to hear about Donna the cook, she has cancer and has had an operation, she is due Chemotherapy quite soon. Unfortunately she cannot work this year, Yiota has set up a collection for Donna, so friends can donate food or money to help her out over this difficult time. That is what the Greeks do in times of dire need, help each other out.
The new chef seems to be good, he is cooking all the same menu, with his own little touches – well worth a try!
We ended the night in Coconut to have a nightcap, we were surprised how few people were there even Yiota had gone to bed.
16th May 2016
Woke up to wonderful sunshine today, hopefully the washing will finish off drying. We decided to have a drive over to Sea Monkeys, in Sidari for a late lunch. Poppy had a whale of a time, she found some children playing in the water, so she took her ball over to them, they were playing for a good hour with her. Not sure who enjoyed it the most, Poppy seems to be suffering a bit now, she seems a bit stiff. I am sure she has just overdone it and will be rearing to go again tomorrow.
Huee loving being at Sea Monkeys, if you look closely you can see Phil waving.
Dot looking very relaxed
Swish new seating area complete with planters
Back to the apartment, wine, cheese and biscuits for us and an early night after the late one last night.
17th May 2016
Wall to wall sunshine again. We had a slow walk down the front, met lots of people on the way. Sat and had a drink and sandwich at Sharons’. Perfect weather, Poppy had a good swim again.
We have two new Zebra crossings, wonder if anyone will use them!
Also the bench is back at the end of the Jetty.
This evening we went to the Rainbow for dinner. We met Eggy in there, he had been kicked out of his house, so Wendy could watch a TV program in peace. I tried Retsina again, still don’t like it!
18th May 2016
Sunny morning, washing is drying beautifully! 23 deg this afternoon. Too hot to sit out for long.
Met up with Bob and Chris, his brother-in-law, they came to collect Christine’s ashes. Bob brought me one of Christine’s water colour paintings as a memento of her, she was a very talented lady. I will treasure it.
This evening we went to the new Grill room, Bouyata. Bouyata(noun):A traditional Corfiot word meaning the wooden construction used by villagers to transform the wood into charcoal. We had a delicious meal, we had starters, then tried the Chicken Gyros, mmmmmmmmmm all very, very tasty. Also not expensive. We shall certainly return.
19th May 2016
Dull. cloudy morning today. Matches my emotional mood as it is 35 years since my father died, was the worst day of my life.
I went to the airport with Kostas to pick up my friend Barbara, who is here for a week. He dropped us off to have a mooch in Jumbo and then have a coffee, while he did some shopping and went back to the airport to pick up Nick, who was on the next flight. We got back to the Marvel for a glass of vino and lunch. We had a mesimerrie this afternoon.
This evening, 10 of us went for a Chinese in Sidari, we had a fantastic meal. It was great to be with good friends, we never stopped laughing all night.
20th May 2016
Very wet today, never stopped raining all day and ended with thunder and lightening this evening. Electric was coming and going, as was the internet. Dot, Barbara, Phil, Poppy and I stayed in the apartment all day. Our back garden looked like a lake at one point, but was too dark to take photo. Never mind we had a good natter and ate well, good job we had lots of eggs, sausages and frozen chips in. Plenty of wine too. As they say Rain stopped play – only outdoors though.
4th Week in Arillas
21st May 2016
Still very cloudy after the storms last night. Our car park at the back just looked like a lake, but it soon drains away. Beyond the fence at the end there is a stream which runs down to the beach. The water was gushing down from the hills. Normally it is just a gentle flow but today it was really loud.
We have decided to club together to hire a car for a week so we can get to places that are difficult to reach in our Motorhome. I walked down to have a word with Theo at his rental place, but he does not have one until Monday. He said it is a combination of bad weather and people just hiring for the weekend, that all his cars are out.
I walked down to Alex’s supermarket for some milk and saw Stella, she showed me the room we will be staying in, in September when we are over for my birthday. It is a tiny little ground floor, one bedroom place behind the supermarket, it has a pretty little garden. I think we will be very happy there – no hills for Phil to climb. While I was there, Litsa from Brouklis was in the shop with her youngest son, he was very busy dismantling a display of plastic balls and throwing them all out of the basket. It was so funny, I wish I had had my camera, we were all howling with laughter at him.
This evening we went to Rainbow as they were having their first BBQ night of the season. It was a great night as usual, the food was superb. We started off with salad and Tzatziki, followed by either chips or jacket potato with BBQ chicken portion, lamb chop, bifteki, sausage and a skewer of pork. I don’t think any of us finished all our meat – it was delicious.
The star of the show, Nefsika, looking beautiful in the traditional head-dress and smiling her radiant smile.
After the meal, we had a slice of Paul Robert’s birthday cake. Another fantastic evening and thanks to John Wright who took the above photos as I forgot to take my tablet with me.
22nd May 2016
Beautiful warm sunny day to wake up to, this is more like the Arillas we know and love. Janice came for a coffee this morning, we had a good catch up. Then we all walked down to Ammos for coffee and a spot of lunch. At long last I finally met the beautiful Karelian Blonde, Erja we have spoken on Facebook and the Forum for years but never met until today. She is the lovely bubbly person I knew she would be. After lunch I took Poppy for a swim and then had a wander back up to have a rest. We ate at Brouklis tonight, wonderful as usual. Then we met up with Davo and Tracy for a drink in the nut and then another in the Marvel. They go home tomorrow, but will be back early July just after we go home.
There was a beautiful sunset tonight. This was taken by a friend from Anemos restaurant.
23rd May 2016
Sunny and hot, went to pick up the car this morning, Dot, Barbara and I went to San Steph to Hippopots and then had a late breakfast in 2 Stars, such a warm welcome as usual. We came back and picked Phil up and drove over to Kassiopi to show Barbara how lovely it is. We stopped at the Ice cream place on the way back. I have never seen so many varieties. Pizza tonight at Pizza Letharo. Busy but tiring day.
24th May 2016
Sunny morning, little bit cooler though. We decided to go to Akrotiri for coffee this morning, Dot, Barbara, Janice and I. We started off by sitting in the sun but had to move into the shade.
I went up on the roof to take some photos, but they do not do it justice.
Also a short video –https://www.dropbox.com/s/nj6mh4d7klevahk/2016-05-24%2010.49.22.3gp?dl=0
This afternoon, we went to 7th Heaven at Peroulades – this is the place where they have the glass floored balcony over Logas beach. There are some spectacular views from here.
Portofino tonight for our evening meal. We had a great laugh! Spiros was his usual, exuberant, naughty self. I think Barbara enjoyed it, as this is what she wrote on her Facebook page – ‘OMG – real life Fawlty Towers at Porto Fino, Arillas, Corfu after the boss took our order and chose what we were going to eat, delicious food…… Doggy bag? What doggy bag? Bill? Are you having a laugh? – OMG that should have been my last night in Greece for 2016 – that was just sooo funny! Still laughing and I didn’t get bedded by the boss! OMG best entertainment ever experienced on my holiday with my friends and Mrs Dot…. xxxx’
25th May 2016
Sunny day, but quite windy, we went to a Quiz at Sharon’s not many people there I think the wind put them off. Please do not ask where we came suffice to say we thought the questions were very hard.
Today is the day Donna, from Portofino, goes into hospital. We are all thinking of her. Yiota has a collection box in her shop, yesterday she was able to give her her 156 Euros, but I am sure there will be more.
We went up to Night Owl for Barbara’s last meal, and then to the Marvel for a goodbye drink with her. It has been fun, and I am so pleased Dot and Barbara got on so well together.
26th May 2016
Sorry I didn’t wave you goodbye Barbara, but I had a lie in until 10am. Dot and I had a girly day, we had a look round the shops, we both bought a new top and I bought an outfit for Archie too. Phil stayed home and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Stayed home tonight and had Sausages, they had chips I had a jacket potato.
27th May 2016
Brilliant day today, beautiful and sunny 27 deg. We drove over to the East coast for a change. We visited The White House at Kalami. After reading the trilogy and watching the TV series of the Durrells it seemed like a good idea. What a beautiful place it is. I would love to stay there, and people watch. Also to see everyone arrive by boat to visit the tavernas on the beach. The White House, has lots of little ‘Durrallisms’ like the Stork on the post, and the ducks on the olive press.
Kalami Bay
The White House
We drove all the way down to Ipsos and had a late lunch early dinner at Sally’s bar. I had my favourite burger with black pudding – bloody lovely!
The end of our 4th week, our Arillas visit is halfway through. The time has flown by.
5th week in Arillas
28th May 2016
Today we should be celebrating our friend Christine’s birthday, instead we have scattered her ashes. RIP my beautiful friend in your favourite holiday place. Just under a beautiful olive tree, overlooking Arillas bay.
These were my flowers for Christine, she loved flowers, so this is my small tribute for her birthday. I laid them under the tree alongside her ashes.
This evening Phil and I were invited to dine with Christine’s family, Bob, Chris (Christine’s brother), Darren and Adam (her sons) and their wives. After the meal, we walked to the end of the jetty and sent two Chinese lanterns flying up to heaven. A perfect send off!
It is so hard to believe that only last June we met up with Bob and Christine again, while they were staying at the Marina. We took them to Bavaris for a meal one night as they had never been. Christine messaged me every morning when Dot took Poppy down to the beach for an early morning play, sometimes a photo taken from their balcony too.
We ended the day in the Rainbow for a nightcap and to listen to ‘The Worried Men’ doing their first gig of the season.
29th May 2016
Sun, sun and more sun today and lots of lovely heat. I took the car back early this morning and took Poppy for a swim. Never saw a soul that I know, that must be a first. Phil went off to watch the Grand Prix so Dot and I went for a stroll down to the Marina and watched the world go by. We sat in the garden after we came back, by which time the sun had disappeared behind clouds but it was still very hot. It is such a pleasant quiet spot to sit and read, listening to the water flowing down from the hills to the sea. Had a short visit from Eleni who came to prepare one of the upstairs apartments ready for some more guests tomorrow. Then we had a chat to our lovely neighbours Ann and John. Phil came back from watching the Grand Prix a happy bunny as Lewis had won in Monaco. This evening we went to the Rainbow, had a lovely welcome as usual, and a very tasty Sweet and Sour Chicken meal, washed down with an excellent Rose. Later in the evening our friend Rachel and family arrived, we had a good catch up.
30th May 2016
Cloudy start to the day and much cooler – I think we are in for a storm!
This is the little blighter that has caused all the Palm trees in Arillas to be cut back. It seems that it has been spread by the importing of young plants already hosting this destructive little creature.
The following is taken from Wikipedia –
‘The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, is a species of snout beetle also known as the Asian palm weevil or sago palm weevil. The adult beetles are relatively large, ranging between two and five centimeters long, and are usually a rusty red colour—but many colour variants exist and have often been misidentified as different species (e.g., Rhynchophorus vulneratus).[2] Weevil larvae can excavate holes in the trunk of a palm trees up to a metre long, thereby weakening and eventually killing the host plant. As a result, the weevil is considered a major pest in palm plantations, including the coconut palm, date palm and oil palm.[3]
Originally from tropical Asia, the red palm weevil has spread to Africa and Europe, reaching the Mediterranean in the 1980s. It was first recorded in Spain in 1994,[4] and in France in 2006. Additional infestations have been located in Malta and Italy (Tuscany, Sicily and Campania). It is also well established throughout most of Portugal, especially in the South.[5] Researchers also suspect that it has established in Morocco, Algeria and other North African countries, but there remains no official confirmation.[6] The weevil was first reported in the Americas on Curaçao in January 2009[7] and sighted the same year in Aruba.[8] It was reported in the United States atLaguna Beach, CA late in 2010.[9][10]‘
‘This weevil usually infests palms younger than twenty years.[11] While the adult causes some damage through feeding, it is the burrowing of the larva into the heart of the palm that can cause the greatest mortality of trees. The adult female lays approximately two hundred eggs on new growth in the crown of the palm, at the base of young leaves, or in open lesions on the plant.[citation needed] The egg hatches into a white, legless larva. The larva will feed on the soft fibres and terminal buds, tunneling through the internal tissue of the tree for about a month. The larvae can occasionally grow to a length of six to seven centimeters.[12] At pupation, the larva will leave the tree and form a cocoon built of dry palm fibers in leaf litter at the base of the tree. The total life cycle takes about 7–10 weeks.[citation needed]’
I was reading on the forum how people are worried about the palm trees, seems like we should all be worried.
Had a very lazy day today, in fact we didn’t even go out apart from taking Poppy up the lane for a run round the field. Done some washing, reading, Suduko, chatting to the neighbours, and cooking lunch and dinner.
31st May 2016
Another lazy ish day again, just relaxing in the garden This evening we went up to Mon Amour with our neighbours, excellent meal again and then finished the night off in the Coconut, listening to The Splinter band.
1st June 2016
The day started off lovely and sunny, but by the time we got motivated to do something, it turned cool and dull, looking like rain. So another uneventful day. We have been looking on the internet at campsites on Corfu – just an idea at the moment, may check some out for next year’s trip.
We were just talking about e-cigs – neither of us have smoked tobacco for over 2 years now but still like our e-cigs. We have tried quite a few different types, including cheap ones from ebay, but as with most things we have found you get what you pay for. Our favourite ones, are the ones we have set up an affiliate page for, yes they might be a little more expensive but they are reliable to use and the company’s customer service is second to none. We have found buying them in Greece is very expensive, including the liquids. So once again I will post the link. (Yes we get a small commision from it, helps to eek out our pensions)

Tonight we went to a Quiz at the Rainbow, not a huge turnout, but was lots of fun. There were 5 teams and we came 3rd. There was a prize for all entrants, so thank you very much for our Kumquat liquor.
2nd June 2016
Lovely warm and sunny today.
We did manage a walk down to the front for Poppy to have a swim today, she adopted a family with two little boys who were throwing her stick for her. We went to Sharons for lunch. Then met Dot, Sheila, and Keith in the Akti for a late afternoon drink. We stayed in tonight and had a Pizza and Greek salad, followed by Baclava.
3rd June 2016
So proud of my self drove all the way to top of Mount Pantokrator. Highest mountain on the island. All 2,972 feet of it. It was 27deg and a beautiful sunny day. Dot was a nervous wreck when we arrived, she praised my driving but said she never wants to go up again.
Mount Pantokrator (sometimes Pantocrator, in Greek) is a mountain located in north-easternCorfu. At 906 metres (2,972 ft), it is the highest mountain on the island. At the summit, the whole of Corfu can be seen, as well as Albania which lies a short distance from the island. On particularly clear days it is also possible to see Italy despite it being around 130 km (81 mi) away. At the top there is a café for tourists, a telecommunications station, whose largest tower stands directly over a well,[1] and a monastery. The first monastery on the site was Angevin, built in 1347 but then destroyed sometime around 1537. The current church on the site dates from around 1689, and the current facade was built during the 19th century. It is dedicated to the transfiguration of Christ. To get to the peak, you can either drive to Mount Pantokrator up a series of windy roads from the coast, or walk to the top. If you choose to walk, one of the best places to start is in Old Perithia, Corfu’s oldest village, where it takes approximately 2 hours round trip. The village of Old Perithia dates back to the 14th century and the ‘Perithians’ helped build the original monastery using local wood and limestone. The village of Old Perithia (and the now abandoned village of Sinies) can be seen from Pantokrator and with its 130 house and 8 churches Old Perithia is said to sit at the foot of Pantokrator, ‘The Almighty.’ The walk to Pantokrator is also part of The Corfu Trail, an established walking guide around the island of Corfu, although they fail to maintain the paths, so walks such as Perithia to Mt. Pantokrator are now nearly impossible to detect.

Only 3 weeks left of our 2016 Arillas or Bust!
6th Week in Arillas
4th June 2016
Beautiful sunny day, took the car back this morning. Then Dot and I took Poppy on the beach and for a swim. We had breakfast In Beach Point and very nice it was too, we only had the small one and there was plenty. Had a slow meander up the hill. Met lots of people we hadn’t seen yet, including Pat and Barry, who have been here since 19th April. It is amazing in such a small village how you can go that long without bumping into folks.
OMG what a wonderful afternoon we had, we popped next door to visit our neighbours John and Ann, to share a bottle (or 3) of vino and some cheese and biscuits + nibbles. We had such a good laugh, and met some new friends, Bill and Ann, who got engaged at the Rainbow last year. Sophia and Kostas from the Marvel came for a quick drink too.
It was such a laugh when Kostas turned up pushing his wheelbarrow taxi in case we needed it later. It is afternoons like this that make Arillas so magical.
We stayed in tonight and had a Pizza delivered.
There was an amazing sunset tonight, this photo was taken by Vas at Marina.
5th June 2016
Hot and sunny all day, we just lazed about, tonight Dot went out with her friends Tony and Sue. We went to the Marvel for dinner.
6th June 2016
Dot had to go and see Dr. Yannis today as her back is really hurting her. He gave her three injections, one for pain, one as a relaxant and one for blood pressure as it is sky high. She had to go back this evening for him to check the blood pressure again, it had gone down, but he wants her to see the doctor asap when she gets home.
Dot and I went to the beauty shop, she had her Eyebrows plucked and I had a Manicure and Pedicure. Then we went next door to the quiz, it was an interesting one, we came third! Afterwards we took Poppy for a swim and play on the beach.
This evening we went to Armourada for dinner, Phil and I had the most amazing Bifteki stuffed with feta – best of the holiday so far. Ian and Joy joined us for a nightcap and we sat chatting for ages. Was a good last night for Dot as she flies home tomorrow.
7th June 2016
Hot and sunny again, it is our youngest grandaughters birthday today, happy birthday Emily.
Dot and I had a wander down for her to say goodbye to a few friends, she only made it to the Akti as her back was hurting so she sat and had a coffee while I took Poppy for a swim. We had a slow walk back and Dot rested all afternoon, then she went to the docs again for another injection to make her comfortable for travelling. She left at 8pm and Phil and I stayed in and had a quiet night.
My friend Keith sent me some photos he has taken of Poppy – I thought you might like to see this one, I have it as my laptop wallpaper.
8th June 2016
Had a call from Dot – home safe and sound eventually. She was supposed to leave at 11pm. Eventually flew at 2am. The plane from England was late, then some nutter was threatening to kill his girlfriend, family, Stewardess etc. So they had to wait for the police to take him away. Just what you don’t need at the end of a holiday. She said Easy Jet staff were wonderful, she was cold, and they don’t carry blankets now so 2 stewardesses gave her their winter coats to put round her.
27deg at mid-day. Too hot to do too much so we didn’t. I have two mosquito bites on my foot, which are quite swollen, I took an antihistamine tablet and laid on the bed next thing I knew it was 2 hours later. Had a quick shower and went over to the Marvel to say goodbye to Ann and John who are going home in the morning. That 6 weeks went quickly.
9th June 2016
Hot and sunny, wall to wall blue sky. Today it is –
The Ascension festival in Arillas 2016
On Thursday the 9th of June there will be this year’s first festival in Arillas. It takes place near the local Church and old school of Arillas village which is about one and a half km from the beach on the way to Magoulades on the main road.
The local church is dedicated to the The Ascension of Jesus, which was when the resurrected Jesus was taken up to heaven in his resurrected body, (Acts 1:9-11) in the presence of eleven of his Apostles, occurring 40 days after the resurrection. The church on Analipsi “???????” (Ascension) was build during the 50’s by the volunteer help and donations of the people of Arillas. Since then, we established the Arillas Analipseos Festival which is always on a Thursday 39 days after the Greek Easter Sunday. The event starts at about 20:00 until late in the night. The Festival is organized by non profitable organizations based in Arillas those who are responsible for the Wine Festival in September and the Music festival in July or August. The Arillas Folklore dancing club is consisted by over 60 members from the ages of 5 to 60 years old . Every time they dance you can experience these different traditional Greek dances performed by this mixture of ages all with the same pride, something that we do not see any more in many countries. The music from the Traditional Live Band is combined with some BBQ with souvlakis , wine and loads of our Local Corfu Beer from our unique Microbrewery.

We didn’t manage to go to it, as my foot is swollen and I felt really lethargic. I sat with my feet up, with a glass of Zinfandel and played my new favourite game – Freecell – it is addictive.
We had some sad news today, Armourada is closed as Takis has been taken ill and is in hospital. It turned out that he had to have his Appendix removed and has to stay in for a few days.
We stayed in tonight – we must get out more lol. Just enjoying all the chilling.
End of another perfect week, time is flying by now!
I found this on Facebook, by David Carolan!
7th Week in Arillas
11th June 2016
Hot and sunny again.
It is the Queen’s 90th birthday today. Happy birthday ma’am – not sure about your lime green outfit, but you look amazing for 90.
Also Spiros at Portofinos birthday, we had a lovely meal followed by a piece of this delicious cake.
We sat and talked to Ann and Roger, had a good catch up and a lift home – thanks guys, much appreciated.
12th June 2016
We had a visit from Joan and John today, they popped in for a coffee and to say goodbye as they go home tomorrow. Then we went across to the Rainbow for Brunch. Neil came to join us and we had a good catch up him, putting the world to rights as usual.
Went to the Marvel tonight for Phil to watch the Grand Prix, we had a drink with Ann and Billy, they are going home tomorrow to start planning their wedding for next June. Then we had a drink with Sue and Frank, great night again.
13th June 2016
Woken up very early this morning to the sound of thunder and the worst torrential rain I have seen in Arillas. Dimitris confirmed it is the worst storm in Arillas for 20 years.
Back garden
Front garden
https://www.facebook.com/kevin.gable1/videos/10208406416671443/ this is a video taken by our friend Kevin. The stream runs behind where our Motorhome is parked, usually you can hardly see the water unless you lean over. It is about 8 feet below our garden. Today I could see it from our balcony.
This photo was taken by a friend at 10am.
This is Sharon’s pool bar, after the storm. There is lots of sand and mud in the pool.
Two days later – Sharons 15th June
When it stopped raining, just after lunch. We took a stroll down to see if any damage had been done, by this time it was hot and sunny again. No one seems to have suffered much damage, just lots of cleaning to be done.
We stopped and had a chat to Leon, he said Takis is doing quite well. He had his Appendix out, but he has had complications with his bloods as he is diabetic. Also not such good news for his heart and kidneys. He has to stay in hospital a few more days.
The good news is the restaurant is open again.
We arrived at Malibu, just in time for the end of the Quiz, we didn’t know it was an hour earlier because of the football. We gave our donation to the Animal charity anyway. Had a drink and a chat to Georgios.
We walked all the way along the beach to Ina’s, there was quite a bit of debris on the beach, but they had raked it and there was a dumper truck scooping it all up while we there. You would never know it had happened.
Poppy enjoyed her swim, she had a great choice of sticks today. We had a drink at Sharon’s and chatted to Ian and Joy, also Kevin and Sarah. Joy is working with Sharon, as Danielle has come off her bike – again. I walked across to get some milk from Alex’s, then we had an early evening meal in Bouyata. It made me laugh when I was asked ‘where is your Mum?’ meaning Dot.
We had a quiet night in, but the electric kept going off. During one of the earlier power cuts, we had a knock on the door – it was Paul from next door bringing us some candles, it was so kind of him. Luckily we had candles, but nothing to light them with, one of the drawbacks of giving up smoking. Anyway he went toddling off to get us one, bless him.
14th June 2016
No storms in the night and woke up to bright sunshine. What a difference a day makes.
The ground is drying up lovely, not so spongy today. The stream is back to normal, about 8 feet down and I can see the pebbles in the bottom.
Beach front back to normal.
Little Angelos out for a spin
Kostas on the Beach staff 1988 – posted on Arillas Addicts on Facebook by Nigel Sham Willows. I thought it was interesting that even though, sadly, Kostas is no longer with us he is still loved and remembered by people who use the restaurant. Also by folks who sit on the bench on the jetty. The bench was paid for, as a memoriam, by regular Arillas visitors.
Here is another one posted by Nigel, this time Leon in Armourada in 1989. Wonderful memories, and I can remember it looking like that.
15th June 2016
Beautiful day, sunny and hot 29 deg at one point. We decided to take the Motorhome for a run to Sidari today, so we picked up Sue and Paul. I wanted to call at the Pharmacy for some meds and cream for my mossy bites on my foot. Did a bit of shopping and then went on to Sea Monkeys for lunch. As soon as we got there, Poppy and Toffee went off to play together, then Poppy found someone to throw a stick for her. The lady broke the stick as she saw Poppy struggling to carry it.
We had an enjoyable couple of hours, enjoying lunch and watching the world go by. Home for a shower and nap, then next door for a meal, cooked by Paul. Another very enjoyable day.
16th June 2016
Too hot to do much today, feeling lethargic. Popped over to the Marvel for dinner and drinks.
17th June 2016
32 deg in the shade today, and got up to 35 this afternoon. We walked down for the quiz at Malibu and teamed up with Alice, Sue and Paul. We came 2nd. some great questions there – thanks quizmaster Dave. Popped into the Marvel for a cold drink on the way home.
Sad news today I found out my favourite Uncle George has died aged 88. I was a bridesmaid at his wedding to Auntie Doreen when I was 5 years old, 60 odd years ago and they have both been very special to me. Bless him, at peace and out of pain now.
We went down for a Pizza tonight, about 9.30pm when it had cooled down a little.
Well the end of our penultimate week in Arillas. The time has gone so quickly.
8th (last) week in Arillas
18th June 2016
Well the start of our last week this trip started off very hot, got up to 34 deg in Arillas, and 36 deg on some parts of Corfu. It was just too hot to do too much. We sat around most of the day with cool drinks and stayed in the shade.
British astronaut Tim Peake returned to Earth following his historic six-month mission to the space station. I loved watching it on the news, he seems to be a lovely man and always smiling.
I made a Chicken curry for dinner.
19th June 2016
A bit cooler to wake up to this morning and cloudy.
Phil watched the Grand Prix on the laptop, unusually, it was fairly good internet. I took Poppy for a walk, it was still cloudy but still warm, 27 – 29 deg.
We went to Rainbow for dinner tonight, it might be our last chance this trip to have Vicky’s delicious Chicken Fajita wraps. Then we sat at the bar and chatted to Sue, Eric and Paul. Jimmy made me one of his world famous cocktails. We named it ‘Sex on Cleethorpes beach’ – it is green because we do love our mushy peas!
20th June 2016
A lovely sunny and hot day. I did lots of washing and got it all dry. Mainly to freshen the bedding etc for the Motorhome ready for our trip home.
This afternoon we drove over to San Stefanos to collect some bits from Hippopots and to say goodbye to Jackie, Pete and Bod. We had an early dinner at 2 Stars, I do like it there and such a warm welcome, they always remember us, and even asked after Dot. Just the little touches of a complimentary dish of fresh fruit, and a sweet and drink when you ask for the bill makes you want to go back again.
We stayed in tonight and did a bit of route planning for the trip home. It will be a slow one as we want to go to Provence to see the Lavender fields in full bloom. (Well this ‘we’ does, Phil is not keen – but I have the steering wheel). Then we are going to the cousins near Limoges to deplete their wine rack for a few days, I mean visit our lovely relations. After that we will make our way up the west coast of France to Roscoff to catch the ferry back to UK just in time for a Motorhome rally in Devon and to visit friends in the area.
21st June 2016
26 deg at 10am as I am writing this, gonna be another warm one today. We did a bit of packing and relaxing, then went to Armourada for dinner tonight.
22nd June 2016
Paul and Sue took Poppy for a quite long walk today, she came back worn out. 35 deg again.
We stayed in tonight, using all the bits up out of the fridge, for dinner. More route planning.
23rd June 2016
The Uk’s EU referendum happens today. 35 deg at 2 pm. Wow it is roasting. It did get up to 36 deg mid afternoon.
24th June 2016
Well all over bar the shouting. It was quite a close vote, the UK has voted OUT, I don’t think much will change for a while, except the exchange rates plummeted. Oh well suck it up buttercup, onwards and upwards.
We started packing things in the van, Phil did all the oil/water checks, everything is fine so all good to go on Sunday.
This evening we walked down to Portofino to have dinner with our good friends Grace and Chris. We had a great evening. It was still hot at 8 pm. 35 deg, or as Chris prefers 95 F.
Phil struggled walking back up the hill, there was no breeze and still muggy, 7 stops to catch his breath. The heat does not help though. Still slowly but surely.
Had a quick one in the Coconut as well.
25th June 2016
30 deg at 10 am. I have done one last load of washing ready for the off tomorrow. Packed everything we don’t need tonight.
Now a shower and get ready for our last evening in Arillas.
Joy and Ian picked us up and we went to 7th Heaven at Peroulades but it was very cloudy and the wind coming off the sea was quite strong, We decided to jump ship and went to China town in Sidari. So pleased we moved on it was a great night.
Well that is the end of our Arillas adventure for this year. We will return in September, but are flying over for my birthday.
We are looking forward to the journey back to the UK, starting off with lunch with friends in Ipsos before catching the ferry at midnight.
Journey to UK
26th June 2016
We left Arillas around lunchtime and headed off to Ipsos for a late lunch at Sallys. We headed to the port to catch the 6.30 pm ferry to Igoumenitsa.
Happy to be leaving for another adventure.
We watched this cruise ship leaving Corfu as we waited.
27th June 2016
It was almost 3 am by the time we got to bed in our pet friendly cabin. We had a good night’s sleep. Disembarked around 3 pm and then headed off through Italy All OK except that I scratched the van caught a bollard coming from a chicane on roadworks. Will sort it out when we get home.
28th June 2016
Lago Trasimeno Italy for the night
This very colourful van was parked up just near us. Wonder if something like this will cover the dents!
29th June 2016
We drove quite a long way across Italy today and found this beautiful site – Camping Arc-en-Ciel in Provence it was just so pretty and welcoming. It is a really nice site.
Paul Cezanne’s The Bridge of Trois-sautets (le Pont Des Trois-sautets) was painted here, and the bridge can be seen as you walk by the river running through the campsite.
30th June 2016
We drove around the area today and visited the Gorge of Verdon, it is so beautifully clean, as they do not allow any motor boats or outboard motors.
Parked alongside another motorhome with some lovely graphics.
1st July 2016
We saw lavender galore today, the smell was wonderful as we drove along with our windows wide open. Fields and fields of it.
We drove around the area quite a bit then decided to call it a night at a very quiet ‘aire’ in Florac before we travel 600 km to see my cousin in St. Sulpice – Lauriere.
2nd July 2016
We came across this bridge today on our journey, It was built in 1840 to 1844. and when we looked it up, we found it was designed by the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the Eiffel tower.
We arrived to a wonderful warm welcome from our relations. Much vino was consumed. We had a gorgeous meal of Pate de pomme de terre. Then lots of chatting and laughter until the early hours. Wonderful to see them all again.
3rd July to 5th July 2016
Lots of fun and laughter and generally chilling. Lots more wine and delicious food. Here are some photos of their beautiful garden.
There was a beautiful sunset this evening for our last night.
6th July 2016
Sad to be leaving our cousins today. We have had a fantastic few days with them. Lots of fun, love and laughter, not to mention helping to deplete their wine cellar. We are moving on to La Rochelle area then up the west coast to Roscoff to catch the ferry for UK on the 12th. Stayed at a site in Charron, Poitou, Charentes.
7th July 2016
Just stopped for the night at St. Joachim near Fedrun St. Nazire. This is what is just over the road. Lots of the houses in the village have thatched roofs even the public toilets. It was a free stopover too. We are the only Motorhome here. A hot day and still 25 deg at 7.30 pm. This was just over the road.
8th July 2016
Our spot for the night. The beach is only 50 metres away unfortunately dogs are not allowed.
9th July 2016
Today we found a Vet, so Poppy could have her check up and then headed to Camping la Falaise, Plage de Locmariaquer
We had a fabulous meal in the restaurant on site. The Creme Brulle was the best I have ever tasted.
10th July 2016
Aux quatro Saisons tonight, walked to the nearby beach so Poppy could have a swim.
There was even a Vending machine for fresh bread, stocked up every morning.
11th July 2016
We drove to Roscoff today. You don’t expect to see this at a roundabout in France just outside Saint Pol de Leon. stocked up with some gifts and wine.
Found a lovely site this is the view for our last night in France. We are at Pol de Leon. St. Annes beach.
There is a restaurant just over the road, but it is closed on Monday.
12th July 2016
This is the view we woke up to this morning!
We made our way to the ferry terminal after a late breakfast. We are very impressed with Brittany ferries Roscoff to Plymouth, everything about it was so well organised.
We arrived in the UK about 8 pm and were first off the ship. I had to remind myself to drive on the left and go the other way round the roundabouts. After 3 months in Europe and Greece it just becomes natural.
Drove up the A 38 and stayed at a Truck and motorhome overnight stop.
13th July 2016
When I went into the garage to pay this morning, they said they would not charge us. so that was a bonus.
We drove to Newton Abbot to meet up with our friends Lyn and Dave, we have not seen them for 4 years so we had a good catch up over lunch.
Such a shame I could only have one small glass of wine as we had to drive on towards Ilfracombe.
We stayed at a pub for the night and had a lovely meal and several glasses of wine. This was my dessert, Raspberry meringue tower with clotted cream mmmmmmmmmm!
14th to 17th July 2016
We moved up to Barnarbour near Ilfracombe today as we had booked to go to a meet with 30 of our Motorhome friends for the
weekend. We had a great weekend, on the Saturday afternoon we had a Devon cream tea, complete with Pimms.
Then on Saturday night we had a BBQ. I bought some raffle tickets and my numbers came out 10 times, I took 3 prizes, but put 7 back to be drawn again – lucky tickets!
It was great to meet up with our friends, who we had not seen since Halloween.
New sign for the van
17th July 2016
We left the site at 10 am, had a good drive up to the M5, then had a 70 minute delay as a car had caught fire and there were miles of tailbacks. We arrived in Bewdley around tea time, to our friends Ann and John. They have the apartment next to ours in Arillas. We had a quiet evening in, eating, drinking and playing a general knowledge quiz with questions from 1947 to 1950. It was good fun.
18th July 2016
Our 35th Wedding anniversary today, and they said it would never last lol. Phil is not too well, his breathing is quite troublesome and the heat and lack of air is not helping him. He did not feel like going out, so Ann and I went shopping, like you do. Then we had a drink in a pub alongside the river Seven. We had a walk round the local museum too.
We had a lovely day and ended it with a delicious Indian take away, as Phil was still not up to going out.
19th July 2016
We had to say goodbye to Ann and John this morning, after a lovely breakfast of bacon butties. Thanks for having us guys and will see you in Arillas in September.
We drove up to Liverpool to see our friends, Dave and Sue. There is a huge big car park on the waterfront at Kings dock, they allow Motorhomes to stay overnight – £15 for 24 hours. It was 30 deg this afternoon. Dave, Sue, Shelly and Shaun came to see us when Dave left work.
First thing he noticed was that we had a flat tyre. We said we would call the breakdown people out as Phil would really struggle in this heat, but Dave and Shaun would not hear of it and promptly started changing the wheel. Bless them both.
Sue brought a lovely buffet for us all, we sat around eating, talking and laughing. Having a very good catch up. They left around 11pm and we settled down for the night. It was very quiet considering it is such a busy area.
20th July 2016
Dave called round to pick the tyre up to take it to be repaired. When he brought it back, we all drove up to their house for the day. We had a nice surprise as our friends Kes and Kath had just arrived for a visit to see us. Lots more drinking, eating and laughing. It was a great day spent with special friends. We got a taxi back to the dock and had another peaceful night.
21st July
Going home day! We drove up to Dave and Sue’s where Sue had spoilt us by cooking a full English before our journey home. Irene arrived to say hello and have brunch with us, she is not too well with her breathing either. We spent a lovely couple of days with good friends
We had a good trip over the M62, dropped the van off at our storage place and Gary picked us up to bring us home. It was so good to see him and Anja again, then Larissa and Archie came too.
Archie loves his Fisher Price campervan we bought him!
I had a lovely cuddle – this is a video of him loving bubbles.

Well that is all for Arillas or Bust 2016, I hope you have enjoyed it as much as we have.We have met up with lots of friends and hopefully we can do it all again next year.
